H.K. Samarapala, a father of three, of No. 35/2, Surachchiya, Wewahamanduwa, Matara is suffering from acute renal failure. Consultant Nephrologist Prof. Rezvi Sheriff of the Colombo Medical Faculty has recommended an urgent kidney transplant to save his life.

Mr. Samarapala says his wife has agreed to donate him a kidney. But the operation is estimated to cost nearly Rs. 6 lakhs.

He says he is without a permanent job and not in a position to foot this bill. He requests philanthropists and the general public to assist his cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible.

Nepalese with hashish held at BIA

Customs Narcotics Control Unit yesterday afternoon detected two Nepalese passengers who arrived on an Indian Airline flight at the Bandaranaike International Airport attempting to smuggle hashish concealed in their personal baggage.

The Customs team who detected the suspects was led by Assistant Director K.A. Dharmasena. Investigations are being directed by Narcotics and Baggage Director S. Ramachandran.

Smugglers from Pakistan arrested

The Customs Narcotics Control Unit attached to the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday detected five Pakistanis who arrived from Karachchi on SriLankan Airlines flight, attempting to smuggle into the country, western drugs and cigarettes valued over Rs. 285,000.

Following investigations directed by Baggage and Narcotics Director S. Ramachandran, the men were fined Rs. 285,000 and the drugs and cigarettes forfeited.

The detection was made by a Customs team led by Assistant Director K.A. Dharmasena assisted by Customs officers W.A.N. Jayasinghe, W.M. Seneviratne Banda and N. Ratnayake.
