Galle Face Green cannot be leased - Chief Justice by Wasantha Ramanayake Chief Justice, Sarath N. Silva, PC yesterday stressed that the Galle Face Green was a public trust which could not be leased out. Recalling beautiful memories of the historic Green, the Chief Justice said Colonial Governor Henry Ward dedicated it to the ladies and children of this country. The Chief Justice made these remarks when he issued a restraining order preventing the Urban Development Authority (UDA) from executing the lease agreement with regard to the Galle Face Green with the EAP Group of Companies. He noted that the order would be valid till a final determination was made of the rights application filed by the Environmental Foundation Ltd. The Chief Justice said that exchange of documents were illegal when the matter was before court and the petitioner had a right to the contents of the lease agreement on executive and administrative basis. "Any infringement on the petitioner's rights would be legally dealt with," warned the Chief Justice. At this point, the counsel for the EAP Group of Companies expressed his willingness to provide necessary documents to the petitioner. |
