Sri Lankans to play for Canada in under-19 World Cup

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lanka born opening batsmen Gavin and Trevin Bastianpillai, will come up against their native country, playing for adopted Canada when the two countries meet in a preliminary round pool 'A' match of the forthcoming Under-19 World Cup cricket tournament to be played in Bangladesh later this month.

The Bastianpillai openers have shown good form for the Canadian youth team and have been included in Canada's Under-19 team for the World Cup in Dhaka.

They are set to open batting for Canada against their native country of Sri Lanka when the two teams confront each other at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium (RDVS) on February 17. Gavin Bastianpillai, the older of the two native Lankans, is the regular opener in the Canada Under-19 side while Trevin bats as an opener or a middle order batsmen, depending on the situation.

Born on August 31, 1984 in Sri Lanka, Gavin Bastianpillai is a dependable opening batsman who has made a name for himself with the willow. Trevin Bastianpillai was born on October 26, 1985, also in Sri Lanka. Apart from their batting skills, both have been useful off break bowlers.

Apart from the two players of Lankan origin, Indian and Pakistani born players take a major share of Canada Under-19 team, which will be captained by Lahore-born Umar Bhatti. The 16-member Canadian cricket team was due to leave for Bangladesh yesterday. Similar to the two Lankan openers, Bhatti too has been adopted by Canada. He had migrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1997 with his parents.

Canada are placed in Group 'A' where they will meet a strong challenge from Australia, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe but Bhatti has said he is not scared of any team.

"We are capable of meeting any challenge," he was quoted as saying. Meawnhile, Sri Lanka will meet Zimbabwe in the 'curtain raiser' of the ICC Under-19 World Cup cricket tournament, which begins at Bogra District Stadium (BDS) in Dhaka, Bangladesh next Sunday (15).

Two days later on February 17, Sri Lanka will play Canada at Rajshahi Divisional Stadium (RDVS). At the same venue, Sri Lanka will meet Australia in their third and last qualifying league round match on February 20.

The Super league stage will be from February 22 to 27 with the semi-finals scheduled for February 29 and March 2. The final will be played under lights at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium on March 5.

Canada Under-19 squad to World Cup: Umar Bhatti (captain), Soham Anjaria (vice-captain), Durand Soraine, Trevin Bastianpillai, Mohammad Qazi, Ryan Lall, Gavin Bastianpillai, Kenneth Carto, Karun Jethi, Shaheed Keshvani, Aabid Keshvani, Kunal Patel, Adam Baksh and Simon Upton. Patrick Christian (manager) and Leroy Grey (assistant manager).
