Army contradicts Tamilnet report The Sri Lanka Army yesterday contradicted the report posted on the pro-LTTE Tamilnet Website that seventy nine houses in the outskirts of Chavakachcheri town in Jaffna were vacated during the weekend and the military has pulled back its Forward Defence Line (FDL) 400 meters to free the houses it has been occupying since 2000. Military Spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera said yesterday that the Army has handed over only 17 houses on the outskirts of Chavakachcheri to their owners in an initiative to facilitate the resettlement of civilians. "Seventeen dilapidated houses, of which 14 belong to the Urban Council labourers and four plots of land on the outskirts of Chavakachcheri were released back to their legitimate civil owners on February 7, 2004 following an initiative taken by 52 Division troops," the Military Spokesman stated in a press release issued yesterday. The release said the handing over of 17 houses will not impact on the current security situation in the High Security Zones. "Release of these dwellings and lands in no way affects currently functional security arrangements, nor does it make any difference to the prevailing security situation in the High Security Zone," it said. The pro-LTTE Tamilnet Website yesterday reported that the Sri Lanka Army vacated 79 houses in two suburbs on the outskirts of Chavakachcheri town in Jaffna this weekend. The military pulled back its Forward Defence Line (FDL) 400 meters to free the houses it has been occupying since 2000. |
