School Cricket Review : Joes lived up to expectations

by Chris Dhambarage

St. Joseph's College lived up expectations as one of the best teams in the current inter school season by taking major honours in their centenary cricket match against S. Thomas' College played at Mount Lavinia.

The Josephians who are currently leading the Elephant Lemonade Cup 'A' division league points table scored a convincing first innings win and also retained the Gilmour Jayasuriya memorial trophy for another year. Their bowlers again produced a marvellous performance despite playing away from home and Tharindu Ariyawansa sealed the game with a splendid century.

The stylish opener kept the scoreboard moving at a steady pace despite the fall of wickets at regular intervals and collected his runs in just 116 deliveries with the aid of eighteen boundaries. There were some doubt whether the Joes would collapse after they had struggled to 108 for 4 at the end of the first days play.

However Tharindu Ariyawansa held the middle order together and continued with the good work as the Josephians took a first innings lead of 52 runs. Earlier the two opening bowlers Christopher Fleming and Rajiv Wedachelam had ripped through the Thomian top order capturing three wickets each.

Ananda v St. Anthony's

Ananda College further boosted their chances of winning the Elephant Lemonade Cup 'A' division league title with a smashing innings victory over St. Anthony's College Katugastota and played at Ananda Mawatha.

The Anandians simply outclassed their opponents in all departments of the game and completed their task with nearly a session to spare. They will be really pleased with the performances of young spinner Achala Ranasinghe who finished with a matchbag of nine wickets. But his spell in the second innings was the most important one because he ran through the Antonian batting line up single handedly claiming seven wickets for 27.

The Antonians surrendered quite meekly in this game with the only noteworthy performance coming from young Pramod Fernando. The all rounder followed up his four wicket haul with a stubborn knock of 35 while occupying the crease for over two hours. But his efforts were in vain as the rest of the batting failed to make an impact against some very good bowling from the Anandians.

St. Peter's v Royal

Dasun Randhika stroked a superb 106 as St. Peter's College took first innings points over Royal College in their annual inter school match played at Reid Avenue. Randhika played the sheet anchor role and made certain that the Peterites would reach a challenging first innings total.

However Royal's Nadun Punchihewa also made his presence felt while capturing a five wicket haul. Royal in reply struggled to reach even the two hundred run mark despite a fighting half century from Danushka Edussuriya. But he did not receive enough support from the rest of the batting to build up a good partnership with the Peterites capturing wickets at regular intervals. Left arm spinner Sohan Boralessa was the main destroyer and received good support from Umhar Samsudeen and Shanaka Fernando.

Thurstan v Revatha MV

Thurstan College scored a morale boosting win over Revatha MMV in their inter school match played at Moratuwa. The Thurstanites will be quite pleased with this performance with the Big Match against the traditional rivals Isipatana around the corner. The manner in which they went about their task was outstanding despite playing against a weaker opposition.

The Thurstanites produced their best batting performance and piled up a massive 333 for 5 in their first innings. Shehan Perera led the way with an unbeaten century while the consistent Thilina Masmulla, Charith Wickremaratne and R. Balasuriya also made useful contributions. Kanishka Elvitigala and Sithuka Nameera then added the finishing touches with some penetrative bowling as Revatha MV were dismissed for 63 and 93 in their two innings respectively.

Ananda v Maliyadeva

Ananda College completed a successful weekend as they defeated Maliyadeva College Kurunegala on the first innings in their inter school match played at Ananda Mawatha. The Anandians went on a scoring spree piling up a massive 325 for 7 in their first innings. Their performances did not come as a surprise considering their tremendous batting depth, the experience and the also the fact that were performing on their home grounds.

This time it was Janudhika Sriyapala who grabbed the opportunity to hit a career best 153 not out which set the pace for an Ananda victory. However Maliyadeva College did provide some anxious moments to the home side with some solid batting from their top order. The visitors had the satisfaction of crossing the 250 run mark but yet ended up in the losing side. The pace spin combination of Ranawaka and Jayaweera did the damage sharing seven wickets between them.

Prince of Wales v Dharmapala MV

Prince of Wales College maintained their impressive record in the current season with an easy first innings win over Dharmapala MV Pannipitiya and played at Moratuwa. The Cambrians would have been even more satisfied had they completed an outright win which would have put them in contention for the Elephant Lemonade Cup 'A' division league title.

In fact Prince of Wales were not far away from collecting maximum points as they reduced the opposition to 129 for 6 in their second innings after having asked to follow on. Earlier the Cambrians helped by a superb century from Nalin Praboda reached a mammoth 361 for 6 in their first innings. Srimal Peiris and Amila Sandaruwan also scored half centuries to boost their total.

Gurukula MV v Maris Stella

Gurukula MV scored a first innings win over Maris Stella College in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Negombo. The highlight of the match was a fine century from R. Dinesh of Gurukula MV as they amassed 335 for 9 in their first innings and then dismissed the opposition for 255.

Paceman Tharaka Waduge took a six wicket haul as Isipatana cruised towards an easy first innings win over St. Sebastian's College Moratuwa in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament match played at Havelock Park. The Sebastianites crashed to a disappointing 135 runs in reply to Isipatana's modest first innings total of 233.

Royal v Mahinda

Left-arm spinner Heshan Morawaka captured five wickets for 33 as Royal College scored a convincing first innings win over Mahinda College in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter-school cricket tournament match played at the Galle Stadium. The Mahindians were bowled out for 133 chasing Royal's first innings total of 248.
