Tamil National Alliance divided

A dispute has arisen in the Tamil National Alliance regarding the manner in which it should contest the forthcoming election.

This crisis has resulted due to a suggestion by one section that it should first obtain votes for the party excluding the preferential votes system and thereafter select its group of MPs. The All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) decided to boycott yesterday's TNA meeting as a protest against this proposal. An ACTC spokesman said if this proposal is accepted, people will lose the opportunity to elect MPs of their choice.

The TNA was due to meet yesterday to decide on the manner in which it should contest the forthcoming election. A group led by TULF leader P. Anandasangaree too had decided to boycott yesterday's meeting.

The TNA consists of the TULF, TELO, ACTC and the EPRLF.
