The SLFP and the JVP will contest as a joint alliance with the CP and EPDP extending their support from outside, while the UNF is also in the fray with the support of some minority parties. SLMC will contest independently, political sources said. The LSSP is due to announce its decision on its support for the Freedom Alliance at the party's politburo meeting shortly. Internal party sources revealed that the CP will join the Freedom Alliance and the final decision in this regard will be taken up at the party's Central Committee meeting today. The Ceylon Workers' Congress led by Arumugam Thondaman has presented three demands to all contesting parties. They are to improve the education of estate children, solving their housing problem and introducing an ethnic ratio for recruitment to the public sector. "We are ready to discuss these issues with any party," CWC party spokesman R. Yogarajan said. Meanwhile, the Democratic Left Front and the New Left Front are working out arrangements to build an alternative alliance, party sources said. The Tamil National Alliance is yet to take a decision on their election plans and fielding candidates, sources said. The Sihala Urumaya has decided to field candidates in all districts including the North - East. |
