News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNP convention on Feb. 22 by Ananda Kannangara The United National Party (UNP) will hold a special convention at the New Town Hall, Colombo on February 22 (Saturday) under the patronage of party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The convention will commence at 9 a.m. A large number of Government Ministers, UNF Members of Parliament, Provincial Council and Members of Pardeshiya Sabhas are expected to attend the convention. In addition, representatives of UNP branch offices will also take part. "The main objective of holding the convention is to create an awareness of the UNP organisers islandwide on the conduct of the forthcoming General Election," UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatillaka told the Daily News yesterday. He said during the awareness program the party leadership is also expected to ask the area organisers on how to maintain maximum law and order before and after the elections.It will immensely help the conduct of a free and fair election. He also said the Prime Minister will spell out details of the progress of the peace accord signed by the Government to stop the war and on many other development programs planned with the help of donor countries. Karunatillaka also said that after the main UNF election meeting to be held in Kandy on February 26. A large number of rallies will be conducted in every district before the election. |
