President condoles over Moscow blast President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has sent a message of condolence to Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin over the recent bomb blast in Moscow which killed 39 and injured more than 100. The message: "I am deeply shocked over the recent bomb explosion that took place in Moscow resulting in the loss of 39 innocent lives and injuring more than 100 people. While condemning unreservedly this despicable act of terrorism, I firmly believe that the international community should collectively take strong measures to overcome the global threat of terrorism. "The Government and the people of Sri Lanka join me in extending our profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of the Russian Federation and in particular, to those who have been directly affected by the tragedy. Please accept, Excellency the assurances of my highest consideration". Ceremony to mark Vijaya's 16th death anniversary A ceremony to commemorate the 16th death anniversary of actor turned politician Vijaya Kumaratunga will be held opposite the Vijaya Kumaratunga statue, Seeduwa on February 16 at 3.00 p.m. under the patronage of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. After the ceremony, a blood donation campaign and an almsgiving will be held at the Vijaya Kumaratunga Hospital at Seeduwa. The annual almsgiving offered to Sucharithodaya Children's Home, Maharagama in memory of the late film idol will also be held on February 16, a press release issued by Moratuwa SLFP Chief Organiser and former MP Jeevan Kumaratunga said. Trains back on track The disrupted train services returned to normality yesterday noon after locomotive drivers agreed to report to work, a spokesman for the train control room told the Daily News yesterday. The spokesman said except for the night-mail trains to Badulla, Vavuniya, Batticaloa and Trincomalee, arrangements were made to operate all other trains as scheduled. He said intercity trains to Vavuniya and Kandy did not operate yesterday. "Normal train services will resume by today", the spokesman added. No danger in consuming chicken, eggs The Agriculture and Live stock Ministry i a media release allayed fears of the public about the consumption of chicken and eggs following the alarm caused by the spread of the bird flu disease. It stated that the program launched recently to educate poultry farmers on forty ways and means to arrest the spread of the disease have caused some reluctance on the part of consumers to eat chicken and eggs. The Ministry release informed the public that due action has been taken to prevent the disease spreading into Sri Lanka and therefore not to entertain any fear in this regard. Police round up Church attack gang The police yesterday made a significant breakthrough in their investigations into the incidence of attacks on Christian churches in many parts of the country when they arrested a 10 member gang led by a retired railway engineer of Homagama. The suspects were later remanded by the Magistrate. The breakthrough came in the police investigations into the attack on a World Vision Prayer Centre at Kebethigollewa in the Anuradhapura District. |
