by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Police has launched a countrywide operation to round up hardcore criminals ahead of the upcoming general elections. "We are planning a full scale clean up to ensure a peaceful and incident free elections," Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva told the Daily News yesterday. Plans are under way to nab underworld gangsters and undesirable elements, the IGP said adding that he has called a meeting of all DIGs next week to prepare strategies to deal with the remaining underworld figures. Asked if he has any special plan to ensure a violent free poll, the IGP said he is due to meet Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to map out a strategy in this connection. Another top official of the Crime Branch said it is the under world gangsters' nature to get close to politicians during the election period to seek political protection to evade arrest and commit crimes. "They divide between political parties and campaign for their masters carrying out assaults against political opponents," he said. "But we will take all steps to apprehend these gangsters," he said. |
