Sathyaya swept by new wave

by Irangika Range

Sathyaya a teledrama series directed by Vishvanath Buddhika Keerthisena (Boodee Keerthisena) is telecast every Monday on Swarnavahini. Addressing a press conference Boodee said Jackson Anthony invited him to create an exciting story for the Sri Lankan fans. He said he wanted to change the traditional model of the teledrama with his experiences of life in a foreign country.

Mahendra Perera in a scene from Sathyaya.

"After writing the script veteran film director H.D. Premaratna encouraged him to proceed with the work," he said.

He said the dogma style based episodes were done on location without imported props or sets. Sound and image produced together, a hand held camera, natural light and without temporal or geographic alienation and signature, are features of the dogma style have used to create the teledrama.

Mahendra Perera who plays the role of Pradeep said although he had depicted many characters, this was special and a different experience to him. Keerthisena's creative talents provided favourable conditions for him to act realistically.

Dogma

Mahendra said they had a great time changing the dialogues and actions on location.

He learnt more about the dogma style and it has helped make this play more interesting.

While most of the interest in the Danish-based film movement dogma has focused on its bare-bones technique, the heart of its appeal lies in the celebration of character and actor. Inherent in removing the bells and whistles from filmmaking is the death of the stick figure and the stock character.

Dogma is a new wave. But this time the wave is meant to be stronger than the men behind it. Copyrights lawyers are out of luck. Anyone can obtain a dogma certificate if they shoot a film in accordance with the rules. The dogma style was introduced by Las Vontrier, a Danish filmmaker in 1996.

The best actress award was won by B.York for film "Dancer in the dark" by Las Vontrier at the Dogwill Kaarn Film Festival in 2003.

Boodee Keerthisena of Sihina Deshayen and Mille Soya fame, has now entered the small screen arena with Sathyaya, based on his own story with himself at the helm of directing and scripting. Sathyaya comes as a landmark TV serial with English sub-titles.

Deviating from monotonous lines and picturised in dogma style, Sathyaya is emerging as a novel treat for the Lankan audience, as an action-packed thriller laced with suspense, mysteries and excitement.

The story revolves around a young man, Vishva (Mahen Perera) attached to an advertising firm. During an outing he witnesses a gruesome shoot-out between two underground factions.

The fierce battle ends with one person being gunned down after a dramatic road chase. Vishva witnesses the crime and captures the whole episode on his camera.

The gang members having seen this follow him. In the melee to make a hasty escape, Vishva accidentally drops his purse at the scene of the crime.

Trail

The gang then follows him to get the photographs. Meanwhile, the police who find his NIC at the scene also begin to follow his trail suspecting him to have links with the killing.

Vishva faces unexpected hurdles trying to escape from the grips of the ruthless gangsters on one side and the police detectives on the other. One day he transfers the photographs into a diskette and posts them to one of his friends, Shani (Sandra Mac) but the gang comes to know about it. Now the gangsters and the police frantically hunt for Vishva and Shani.

The postal package meanwhile ends up in the hands of Shani's mother who is unaware of the contents or its importance. The mother suddenly falls seriously ill and is taken to hospital.

The story takes a new shape after the two meet an investigative reporter called Rohan who advises them to follow the gangsters and the detectives, in a bid to put pressure on them.

In other words it's like cops turning robbers and robbers turning cops.

The story depicts the endless hardship and struggle the two face to take cover. It becomes a snowball as the high drama unspools with loads of twists and turns.

The main story, also studded with dramatic stunt feats flows, while the sub-plots may tell you a different but relevant tale at the end of each episode. Will the truth surface in the end? Will the underworld gang destroy the young couple? The nail-biting finish will certainly become known after a series of tight and exciting episodes.
