The proposal by Wickremeratne caused an uproar at the LSSP central committee meeting when the party's General Secretary Batty Weerakoon objected to it. Wickremeratne stressed that the LSSP could sign an agreement with the SLFP to contest in the General election, if it doesn't join the SLFP- JVP alliance. After an exchange of words, the proposal was put to a vote and defeated by a small margin. Weerakoon had stormed out of the meeting thrice. Later, Wickremeratne demanded his proposal to be presented for a vote at the party convention. This was rejected by Weerakoon who threatened to resign. Wickremeratne contacted by our sister paper Dinamina declined to comment saying it is up to the party secretary to decide on the issue. Weerakoon, who was out of Colombo was not available for comment. |
