by Sarath Malalasekera The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) investigating the killing of underworld gang leader Abeysinghe Arachchige Sujith Priyankara has found that the vehicle in which the victim was travelling belonged to a policeman attached to the Slave Island Police station. The Policeman, who was the owner of the vehicle, was on Saturday questioned at length by a special police team led by Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, OIC, CCD on the direction of CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda and recorded his statement. The CCD officials recovered the vehicle that the assailants were travelling which was abandoned at a lonely place near the Colombo city. This car had been hired from a rent-a-car service, the Police said. Police also recovered several spent T 56 and .9 mm bullets at the scene. Priyankara was shot dead and three others injured in a shooting incident opposite the Fire Brigade headquarters at Darley Road, Colombo on Friday morning. Investigations revealed that the victim was returning from Court after being granted bail in a murder case. The three others injured are Sunil Jayakumar of Hungama, Anura Kumar and Milton both of Slave Island. The victim is charged with six murders including a murder where he had allegedly, killed four persons in one incident. Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath is directing investigations. CCD ASP Ravindra Karavita, Colombo ASP Hemantha Adikari and Chief Inspector Ranjith Maligaspe, OIC, Maradana Police are assisting in the investigations. |
