Indian PM asks president to dissolve parliament to pave way for elections NEW DELHI, Friday (AFP) Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee called on the Indian president to dissolve the lower house of parliament to pave the way for elections staggered over several days in April and possibly in May. "He called on President Kalam to inform him that the governnment's work had been done... and that the interim budget had been passed after which parliament has been adjourned sine die," said an official from Vajpayee's office. "Vajpayee also talked to the president about the cabinet's recommendation about dissolving parliament." The government has passed the interim general budget and another for the railways. The chief of India's autonomous election commission on Wednesday signalled polling dates would be finalised soon. Vajpayee's Bharatiya Janata Party has been keen to cash in on a "feel-good" mood in India on the back of a surging economy and peace moves with Pakistan as well as to capitalise on a disarray in the main opposition Congress party, which has not held office since 1996. |
