News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Election is no feasible alternative - LSSP The Lanka Sama Samaja Party urges both President and Prime Minister that a general election can afford no solution to the difficulties that stand between them on the task of taking the 'peace process' beyond the uneasy ceasefire that prevails today, General Secretary of the LSSP, Batty Weerakoon said yesterday. He said, neither the UNP nor the SLFP-JVP Alliance can hope to be relieved of the difficulties even where one of them gets a comfortable majority in Parliament. The UNP with such majority will still find the President in the saddle. The SLFP with such majority will find itself hamstrung by the commitments of its Alliance partner in a situation in which the latter has a wholly different and contrary approach from itself on the question of a negotiated political solution. Besides, neither the UNP nor the SLFP could without their mutual co-operation hope to get the 2/3rd majority in Parliament for the political solution they may reach in discussions with the LTTE. It remains a question as to whether in such uncertain circumstances the LTTE would consent to negotiations when in fact an indefinite ceasefire with no end or feasible solution in view can well be to its advantage. |
