Lankans can view Transit of Venus

by Anura Maitipe

Sri Lankans would be able to view the Transit of Venus which will take place after 122 years at 5.15 a.m. on Sunday, a senior astronomer attached to the Union of the Royal Astrologists, Anura C. Perera told the Daily News.

This is a very rare phenomenon unlike the Lunar and Solar eclipses which occur every eight years.

Sri Lankans could view it clearly from 5.15 a.m. to 1.50 p.m. on Sunday wearing dark glasses, he added.

The Transit of Venus was first traced by famous astrologer Sir Edmond Haley in 1716. Since then it has occurred only three times, he added.

The International Astrological Centres around the world are ready to obtain close pictures of Venus' Transit which would provide valuable information for shuttle space programs to be launched by USA, EU, Russia, China and India.
