Senior surgeon caught playing truant by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi A senior cardio-thorasic surgeon attached to the Colombo National Hospital was nabbed by the Health Ministry flying squad for allegedly engaging in private practice during normal working hours. Sources said the flying squad officials nabbed the doctor red handed a few days back while performing a cardio-thorasic surgery at a private hospital in Colombo. The detection followed complaints received against the doctor, a senior investigating official told the Daily News yesterday. He said when the squad visited the private hospital, the doctor was found performing a surgery whereas he should have been on duty at the Colombo National Hospital's cardiology unit. Officials said investigations have revealed that the doctor had engaged in private practise for a long period. "We are now investigating his records for the past three months before taking legal action," the official added. He said doctors and health officials had questioned as to how this doctor had been allowed to perform surgeries at private hospitals during official working hours. "So, we launched this investigation and detected the doctor concerned," the official said. Meanwhile, Health Ministry sources said the doctor had tendered his retirement papers but it had not been accepted. Further investigations are continuing under the direction of Flying Squad Director H. A. Ariyawansa. |
