6th BIMST meeting in Thailand Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando will participate in the sixth BIMST-EC Foreign Minister's Meeting scheduled to be held in Phuket, Thailand tomorrow. Established in 1997, BIMST-EC is a regional cooperation framework comprising Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. A Foreign Ministry press release states the Chairmanship of the BIMST-EC ministerial body held by Minister Fernando since the fifth meeting in Colombo in 2002, will be handed over by him to the Thai Foreign Minister Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai at the forthcoming meeting. Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake will participate in the fifth BIMST-EC Trade & Economic Ministers meeting in Phuket scheduled to be held today. He will sign on behalf of Sri Lanka, the framework agreement on Free Trade Area for BIMST-EC. The signing ceremony will take place on Wednesday in the presence of Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The sixth BIMST-EC ministerial meeting will focus on strengthening cooperation in tourism, agriculture, food processing and institution building for business activities. As the lead country for pursuing BIMST-EC cooperation, in the technology sector as well as the processed food and gem and jewellery sub sectors, Sri Lanka will report on progress in implementing the agreed decisions. Concurrent with the official meetings, the first BIMST-EC Youth Football tournament will be held in Phuket. |
