Seven per cent children don't attend school - Minister by Anjana Gamage Seven per cent of children do not attend school, said School Development Minister Suranimala Rajapakse. There are 328 schools throughout the country with less than 25 students and 1,324 schools with less than 50 students," he said as chief guest at the annual prize giving of D. S. Senanayake College held at its auditorium yesterday. The Minister said he has seen a poster saying that about 3,000 schools have been closed. "If this is true, Provincial Councils should take the responsibility. Other than 323 national schools, all other government schools are administered by the Provincial Councils," Rajapakse said. He said there was an alarming drop of population growth rate that has made an impact for the closure of schools as well. "IT education and computer learning centres are essential in today's education system in the country. There is a major difference in the progress of many fields between international and private schools and government schools. Therefore, everyone should understand the weak points and correct ourselves for a better administrative educational system in the country," he said. The Minister said the National Education Commission (NEC), National Institute of Education (NIE) and Education Ministry are the three key education institutions. Rajapakse said School Development Boards were setup in schools to strengthen school activities and not to privatise the education system. He said a survey had revealed that different problems are faced by the 198,000 teachers in the country and pledged he would personally handle those problems. Principal of D.S. Senanayake College A.
