Port handlings increase in 2003 The total number of tonnage handled by the Colombo Port in 2003 has increased by 7.3 per cent, a Ports Ministry press release said. In 2003 the Colombo Port handled 28196361 metric tonnes classified under container, dry bulk, break bulk and liquid cargo in comparison to 26272591 metric tonnes handled during 2002 reflecting an increase of 7.3 per cent. In view of the substantial increase in the import and export sector, the Colombo Port schemed a well organised plan to cater to the improved situation, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Dr. Parakrama Dissanayaka said. The import of container cargo, too has increased substantially. Container usage for handling Cement, fertiliser, dry bulk cargo, clinker and gypsum (raw materials for cement production) classified under dry bulk cargo, wheat and break bulk cargo and food, drugs, textiles and importation of vehicle had also increased considerably. In comparison to 1.6 million of metric tonnes of cement, fertiliser, clinker, wheat seeds, costic soda classified under dry bulk cargo handled, during the year 2002, the Colombo Port handled 1.4 million metric tonnes during the last year. Export handling of tea, rubber, ready made garments and exportwise varieties which recorded 9404077 metric tonnes in 2002 increased to 10368292 metric tonnes in 2003 reflecting a 10.3 per cent increase. 3880 ships including 3088 containers, 679 general cargo ships, 36 for repairs, 13 ships for bunkering and 22 ships for various other reasons had sought Colombo Port during 2003, the Ports Ministry said in a press release. |
