Police detain three over murder of Indian PM's nephew NEW DELHI, Friday (AFP) Indian police have detained three people in connection with the death of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's grand nephew, who was thrown off a moving train, newspapers reported Friday. Railways police officer V.K. Bhalla was quoted as saying three men from the northern town of Mathura had been detained. The Hindustan Times said railway police, who are known to extort money from passengers, were suspected to be behind the murder, while the Times of India said a soldier was a chief suspect. Manish Mishra, 21, grandson of Vajpayee's sister Vimla Mishra, was hurled from a train on Saturday after he tried to stop a group of men from harassing women passengers. His body was found next to a railway track after he was thrown from the speeding train in the northern town of Kosi Kalan near the Hindu pilgrimage site of Mathura. Mishra and two others, all college students, were beaten unconscious by the youths before being tossed out of the train. In a spate of recent incidents, women have been harassed, stripped or raped on Indian trains. |
