Police team to search Wellawatta suspects' house

by Sarath Malalasekera

Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath has deployed a special police team assisted by the STF to search the house where the two terrorist suspects were arrested following the recent attack on two policemen while on duty near the Savoy Cinema at Wellawatta.

A tight security blanket has been thrown in the City following the attack at Wellawatta by several young men who are alleged to be connected to a terrorist organisation.

The surveillance mounted earlier led to the arrest of the suspects within seconds of the incident, said Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath. "The suspect's motive is very clear. They wanted to grab the weapons from the Policemen on routine duty in Colombo," the DIG said.

DIG Sirisena Herath has assigned the Colombo Crime Division Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda to conduct investigations to ascertain whether the suspects now in custody had any criminal intention to damage or harm any persons.

Prompt action by the Police team led by Chief Inspector Nihal Mendis, OIC, Wellawatta led to the arrest the suspects and recover the weapons, the Colombo DIG said. The injured policemen are warded at the Kalubowila Hospital, the investigators said.
