Over 150 Golfers, tee off at Victoria links today

Nearly 150 golfers both ladies and gentlemen from world over are expected to participate in the sixth Annual Donald Steel Trophy golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort which will be worked off at the Victoria golf links today and tomorrow.

The practice sessions are now on.

In the past this golf championship attracted golfers from countries like Sweden, Singapore, Doha, Switzerland, Germany, France and this year a larger participation is expected according to the Club Secretary Mrs. Janine Weeratunga.

Others involved in the arrangements are General Manager Tony Witham, Lalindra Ranaweera (Marketing Co-ordinator, and Mrs. Susie Dias and Peter Perera.

The weather in the hills is keeping fine and after a very dry spell rain during the week has made the course look luxuriant and green and the fairways have been laid beautifully for the big occasion.

Donald Steel who designed the Victoria Golf Course will grace the occasion along with Martin Ebert.

This golf course was earlier a coconut plantation by the side of the Victoria reservoir and was earlier owned by the National Livestock and Development Board before it was purchased by the Rajawella Holdings who began work on the course in the mid nineties with Tony Witham flying over from Australia to start work after Donald Steel had done the designing part of it.

The present club house was one time labour line rooms of the plantation workers has been given a face lift with the latest facilities.

According to many Victoria is not an ordinary golf course and is one of the most challenging ones in the world. Playing 6877 yards to a Par of 73, Victoria Golf Course has been built to USGA International standards which provides a challenge to golfers of all abilities. All 18 holes provide their own unique challenges but of special interest is the 110 yard par 73 5th hole.

The 7th hole is probably the most demanding hole on the course, if not in the entire island.

Alongside the Donald Steel Trophy championship, several other contests which will include Ebert, Pot, Victorian Bowl, and the Pam Fernando trophy for ladies.

The Winners of the Ebert Pot are: 2000 - Ajith Nishantha, 2001 - Helmst Suchy, 2002 - Malik Ahamedeen, 2003 - Rohan de Silva,

The Victorian Bowl has been won by: 2001 - Sally Collins, 2002 - Usha de Silva, 2003 - Indira Tibblins.

The Pam Fernando Trophy has been won by: 2000 - Suwen Selvaratnam, 2001 - Anook Chitty, 2002 - Niloon Jayatillake, 2003 - Jacjuie Dias.

Two days of exciting golf is in store and the steps taken by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort has made the game extremely popular with weekly competitions being held which includes a variety of Stableford format contests and fun golf which adds spice to the game.
