by Indeewara Thilakarathne

A lawyer has filed a writ application in the Court of Appeal against Minister of Highways and Civil Aviation Tilak Marapona and the Attorney General for failing to take measures to contain the increasing vehicular accidents in the country.

In this application, the petitioner, Attorney-at-Law P. Darmadasa Gomas has cited Minister Marapona and Attorney General as respondents.

The petitioner states that the increasing vehicular accidents could be contained and that the first and second respondents have failed to take proper action to control the accidents.

He states that the first respondent had failed to bring in new laws to punish reckless drivers and to prevent the accidents.

The second respondent had not taken any steps to check vehicular traffic throughout the day. The petitioner prays that notice be issued on the respondents and to issue writs of Mandamus compelling the respondents to bring in new legislations to prevent these accidents and to implement such laws.
