Launch of Spice Council, boon to cinnamon industry

Launch of the 'Spice Council' (TSC) in the Southern Province took place in Monday at Wakwella, Management Development and Training Institute, Galle, and the SPC Governor, Kingsley T. Wickramaratne was the Chief Guest at the occasion.

Spice Council Chairman, Sarada De Silva with Board members, and cinnamon growers, exporters, Export Agriculture Departments Acting Director Dr. M. Ilangasinghe, a USAID representative, Agriculture Technology and Crop Productivity Affairs, Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara were also among invitees.

Governor Wickramaratne addressing the gathering said, we must try to fetch good prices from abroad in order to keep on the stability of the industry.

Producers always seek the chance to obtain a good profit. We must try to export only quality cinnamon, he said.

Dont' expect money from the state for the ruining of the industry," he said.

"Price of one nut of aricanut raised up to Rs. 2 each from 5 cents along with export of aricanuts to Nepal under free trade policy" he pointed out.

Globalization means the change, and every thing is subjected to a rapid change due to developed new technology," he said.

Knowledge will be money in future and teach your children, English, Computer and Technology, he said.

'Kaduwela new Technological Training Centre in a plot of 25 acres was set up hoping to face future challenges", he said.

Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara said, it was Sri Lanka Cinnamon Association functioned under Sarada de Silva which became the Spice Council, under the chairmanship of Sarade de Silva.

Cinnamon was available in Sri Lanka even before Portugese invasion in 1505, the Minister said.

Sarada de Silva the Spice Council Chairman said, Total foreign exchange earned in 2003 exporting cinnamon alone was Rs. 9 billion," Cinnamon office will be opened in Galle shortly," he said.

John Volley USAID representative said, US aid will be granted to the council in toto."
