Shantayanan Devarajan, Chief Economist of the World Bank's South Asia Region will visit Sri Lanka from February 2 to 3. Devarajan will address a public seminar organised by the Sri Lanka Economic Association on February 2 at the Institute of International Relations, Horton Place, Colombo 7 at 5.00 p.m. Sri Lankan born Devarajan was the former editor of the World Bank Research Observer from 2002-2003, and was the Director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. This is his first official visit since taking up his current position on January 1. While here, he will make two presentations of the World Development Report, of which one will be at the Sri Lanka Economic Association. He will also meet senior officials responsible for economic issues and become familiar with the current challenges facing the Sri Lankan economy. His recent research has focused on various aspects of public expenditures in developing countries, including links with growth, project appraisal and foreign aid. Devarajan has worked in areas of trade, tax, real exchange rate and labour market policies in developing countries, natural resources and the environment and general equilibrium modelling. Before joining the Bank, he was on the faculty of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. |
