Cathay to explore stopover flight to India

by Shirajiv Sirimane

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, is exploring the possibility of having a stopover flight to India via Colombo on their Hong Kong bound flight. According to Country Manager Sri Lanka and Maldives, Ronald Lam, this would be some thing the airline would like to concentrate with the open sky policy in India. He said that it would operate daily services between Colombo and Hong Kong, with effect from March 1.

They hope to increase their frequency to China with the increasing tourist potential in the country. As the airline has the licence to operate to both China and Colombo this would be beneficial to Sri Lanka tourism industry as well," he said. A new three time weekly service between Singapore and Colombo will be introduced as a continuation of an existing Cathay Pacific flight between Hong Kong and Singapore.

This would complement the airline's existing four time weekly service that operates via Bangkok, forming a convenient daily frequency between Colombo and Hong Kong.

"This will offer passengers and cargo better flexibility," he said. He said with this the cargo capacity would go up by around 60 percent and would be welcomed by the business community.

With new operations Cathay will be positioned as one of the strongest airlines covering the regional destinations from Sri Lanka, offering passengers flexibility and convenient connections to reach a wide variety of destinations. The airline had a financial set back last year due to the SARS epidemic but recovered towards the end of the year.

Having recently celebrated ten years of operations between Hong Kong and Colombo, the expanson plans by Cathay Pacific are welcomed by Sri Lanka's travel industry.

Having been granted Approved Destination Status by China, the number of travellers are expected to grow rapidly between the two destinations.

James Finlay and Company Limited, is the General Sales Agent for Cathay Pacific Airways in Sri Lanka.
