A super luxury passenger ship "Adonia" boarded with a highest number of tourists executing her maiden voyage berthed at the Colombo Port on Tuesday.

The ship "Adonia" goes in the Colombo Port history as the largest passenger ship to call over at the Colombo Port.

The vessel arrived here from Mermogova, India carrying 1963 passengers belonging to various nationalities namely British, Americas, German and Scandinavians and with a crew of 889. Commemoration plaques were exchanged between the host ship and the guest port, is customary when a ship is making her maiden voyage.

Falling in line with the maritime tradition the plaques were changed between the master of the ship Capt. Richard Fenellow and Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Dr. Parakrama Dissanayaka.

The vessel has comfortable bed rooms, swimming pools, five star restaurants, cinema halls, health care centers, libraries, stadiums, duty free shopping complexes, hospital and with a modern kitchen. The length and breadth of the vessel is 261 meters and 40 meters respectively.

Although the passenger ships are usually anchored in the passenger terminal, however considering the giant-built of the said vessel, she had to berthed at the Jaya Container Terminal.

The Director of Machinnon Machenzie, a member of John Keells Group, Prethilal Fernando, the local agents for the ship said that all arrangements are out and dry to take the tourists to Kandy, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle and around Colombo city.

Fernando further said that plans are afoot to get more passenger ships with tourists in the future to call at the Colombo Port as a measure of boosting the tourist industry.
