Anura calls for program to solve Forces, police problems

Senior Presidential Advisor on National Integration Anura Bandaranaike yesterday called for a comprehensive program to solve problems concerning salaries, transfers and promotions in the Security Forces and Police Department.

He urged the Rs. 1,250 pay hike announced to public servants should also be paid to Police and Security Forces Members.

This particular issue has drawn the President's attention too, Bandaranaike said in a statement yesterday.

The statement says the inflation and the cost of living had rapidly soared under the UNF Government and the people forced to endure severe hardship. The statement: "At a time like this, the Government has not paid the full amount of Rs. 1,250 salary hike to those in the Security Forces and Police Department.

They have been paid either half of Rs. 1,250 or less than that. This is a pathetic situation and has thrown the public servants from the frying pans to the fire.

With the present rise in the cost of living, at least Rs. 3,000 should be added to the basic salary of public servants. In contrast, this Government is attempting to cut down salary increments announced in the recent budget.

Those serving in the Police service working round the clock are paid a low salary. Moreover they are not allowed to engage in strikes or trade union activities to demand for a salary hike. They are facing severe political interference and harassments. Those in the security forces have to undergo severe hardships and have very little time to be with their families.

Police officers are making an immense contribution to protect law and order in the country.

Security forces have come forward to safeguard the country's territorial integrity by even sacrificing their lives. Neglecting yeoman service by Police and Security Forces, the Government is cutting down on facilities enjoyed by the security forces.

Therefore, we urge the Rs. 1,250 pay hike should be paid to Police and Security Forces members."
