Bit to avoid rail strike

In a last minute bid to avoid a rail strike, Railway Authority Chairman P.H. Manatunga said his administration is coming up with a special circular to address the grievances of the railway employees.

Manatunga said he will meet trade unions today to introduce a voluntary retirement scheme for the over-staffed Railway Authority.

"It is a very attractive voluntary retirement scheme approved specially for the railway employees".

Railway trade unions have threatened to go on a strike from midnight today demanding the re-establishment of the Railway Department by abolishing the newly formed Railway Authority.

The trade unions said 13,000 employees representing 21 trade unions will join the trade union action.

Lebanon to free Lankan detainees

The Lebanese government will grant amnesty to a large number of foreign detainees and illegal residents,a Foreign Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

During his visit to Lebanon in September 2003 Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando personally took up the plight of about 200 Sri Lankan detainees and unknown number of illegal residents with the Lebanese President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and the Labour Minister.

Steps by the Lebanese Government come in the wake of a positive response Fernando received from the Lebanese leaders at the highest level. The amnesty following a waiver of penalties and exemption from levies will be endorsed by the Lebanese Parliament shortly.
