Top honour for Sulang Kirilli at B'deshi film festival

DHAKA, Sunday (AFP) A banned film on the real-life story of a young girl torn between illegal abortion and the stigma of illegitimacy has won first prize at the Dhaka International Film Festival, organisers said yesterday.

Sulang Kirilli (The Wind Bird), set in Sri Lanka where abortion is outlawed unless a woman's life is in danger, has attracted international acclaim for first-time director Inoka Sathyangani. Bangladesh's Film Censor Board, however, has refused a certificate to show the film to the public. Instead, it approved a private viewing for members of the festival jury only.
