PGIPBS needs a permanent home

The Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS), a part of Kelaniya University, is the only academic institute in Sri Lanka dedicated solely for the higher studies in Pali and Buddhist studies.

A major handicap for further development of this institute where a large number of both foreign and local students have studied and still continue to study is lack of its own place.

For nearly last three decades the Institute has been moving from one rented place to another in its struggle for existence.

As a result of this unsatisfactory situation, on the one hand, a good amount of its government grant has to be spent on ever-increasing rent and, on the other hand, in a nomadic and temporary atmosphere, it has been very difficult to think of long term development of any study or research facilities at the Institute. The location allocated by the Government for the joint use of Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology and our institute has hardly any room for two expanding academic centres.

Furthermore there are lots of practical difficulties in constructing new buildings at a place already being used by one institute.

The best solution under these circumstances is to secure a suitable location of at least 80-100 perches, within city limits of Colombo, preferably in or around Bauddhaloka Mawatha. Since funds for building can be made available through Government grant the hardest part of the challenge will have won if a suitable land is secured.

Therefore the kind attention of the organisations, institutes and individuals wishing well of higher academic studies in general and the Buddhist academic studies in particular of the country is invited to this very crucial need.

Please contact the Director at Tel. 2501079/23/2368894, [email protected] or at 133/19, Nawala Road, Narahenpita for any information, states an Institute release.
