Kala Pola 2004

Sri Lanka's premier art fair, which completed its twelfth year on January 18 provided an ideal platform for the meeting of minds and art forms, and opportunity for artists and the art loving public to view, appreciate, discuss and purchase the latest development in contemporary art.

Sri Lanka's foremost art fair - the Kala Pola - was ceremonially opened by Minister of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology, Milinda Moragoda and Chairman of John Keells Group, Vivendra Lintotawela, on Sunday, January 18, at 10 a.m. Also present at the opening ceremony was the executive board of the John Keells Group- the principal sponsors of the Kala Pola.

The Kala Pola is jointly organised by the George Keyt Foundation and John Keells Holdings, who have financially supported the fair for 11 consecutive years.


Launch of Sinhala translation of Ernesto Che Guevara's Bolivian Diary

The unabridged Sinhala translation of Ernesto Che Guevara's Bolivian Diary will be launched at the Library Services and Documentation Board Auditorium on January 28, Wednesday at 4.00 p.m.

The Diary gives a heart-rending account of the eleven month long failed uprising led by Che Guevara in Bolivia. The long introduction written by Fidel Castro, to the first edition of his most trusted late comrade's unfinished diary is also included in the translation.

At the launch, mediaman Mohan Samaranayake and Dhamma Dissanayake Lecturer, Political Science and Policy Studies Department of Colombo, University will speak on the theme 'Is Che Guevara's political agenda valid for today?"

After the talks the floor will be open for a discussion.

The Sinhala translation is authored by Malini Govinnage.


School Dance Competition winners

The Katuwana National School, Hambantota has achieved many victories by showing their dancing prowess with sheer dedication.

Sabaragamu dance, lowcountry dance and ballet items presented by students of the Katuwana National School have won the first places from the All Island School Dance Competition held St. Joseph's Maha Vidyalaya, Anuradapura in 2003. H.G. Gayani Maheshika, a student of Grade Eight won the first place for "Gejjimathra" (solo) competition for the lowcountry dance tradition.

The mixed dancing team

The female dancing team also won first place for "Pattuthalmathra" (female) competition of the Sabaragamu dance tradition.

The mixed dancing team has won the first place for "Balimathra" (mixed) competition with "Thala navaye graha panthi" of the Sabaragamu dance tradition. According to their achievements from 1997 to 2003, they have won five first place awards and three second place awards in the solo dancing competition and six first place awards and one second place award in the mixed dancing competitions.

These successes should also be attributed to the dancing teachers of the school M.P.W. Ravindranath Muthugala and L.A.S. Damayanthi Muthugala. They are graduates of the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya.
