Software Foundation formed to develop ICT industry by Sudarshana Perera For the first time in Sri Lanka, local ICT professionals and industrialists through a synergy " Lanka Software Foundation" ventured into "Open Source Software" development to improve local ICT industry. The foundation, a non-profit organisation will play a catalytic role to encourage Sri Lankan developers to participate in global "Open Source" software projects. "Open Source Technology" which can be run on "Linux" is freely available under a liberal open source licence or code. The new technology has commanded cooperation to be developed under a common platform. "We take Sri Lanka to a centre stage in the "Open Source arena" to showcase county's ICT expertise and its potentials towards developing global ICT industry", said Chairman and Executive Director of Lanka Software Foundation Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarna at the launch of the foundation, in Colombo. "We believe that "Open Source" can be a major positive influence in the further development of Sri Lanka both in public and private sectors", said Dr. Weerawarna. "This initiative will pave the way for local ICT community to develop a high impact "Sri Lanka Software brand", he said. "This is a major synergy to contribute intellectual capacities in developing improved ICT culture in the country. The foundation is formed with the assistance of Sri Lanka Software Industry (Virtusa, John Keells Computer and hSenid) and the universities of Moratuwa and Colombo", he said. |
