Children should make the best in schooling age - Kiriella

"Many development projects get disrupted due to the competition among contractors who are involved in them. When development is disrupted due to their greed, it is the politicians who always get the blame," said Plantations Industries Minister Lakshman Kiriella when he opened a new school building at Jinaraja (Boys) Vidyalaya, Gampola recently.

Minister Kiriella said the school building opened by him was one such case in point. Every government in this country had rendered dedicated service towards the fostering of education by providing the necessary buildings, equipment and other facilities. It was the duty of schoolchildren to make maximum possible use of these facilities for their future well-being.

The schooling period is the best and most rewarding period which comes for a person once a life time and children should try to profit from it without wasting it.

Minister Kiriella said learning of English had become a priority today in the context of modern world trends. He would therefore take steps to get specialist English teachers posted to all schools in the Gampola electorate with the assistance of the Provincial Education Authorities.

The Minister said that Sri Lanka in the 1950s boasted about the best system of English Education in the whole of Asia. The education system was severely disrupted as a result of the '83 riots and the '89 period of terror.

The child population would inherit a better future and there will be overall social development if parents, teachers and politicians lead exemplary lives.

For all this to happen prevalence of a peaceful atmosphere in the country was a fundamental pre-requisite. It was up to the people themselves to ensure peace in this country or disrupt it.

Provincial Education Minister V. Radhakrishnan, Provincial Council member Peter Gangahagedara, Principal R. M. Mandanayake and several others also spoke.
