Environmental protection activities of LTTE discussed

A meeting was held between the Vavuniya LTTE Leader, Elilan and Dr. (Mrs) Ajantha Perera, the founder of the National Program on Recycling of Solid Waste to discuss about the environmental issues in the Vavuniya area.

According to the LTTE leader of Vavuniya, the LTTE has taken the ban on polythene extremely seriously and are continuing to ensure that the area becomes polythene free. In fact the restaurants and the people have been asked to use banana leaves to make food parcels.

All the LTTE personnel have been requested to use cloth banners for all their functions. In fact a monitoring system has been developed to watch closely whether the people are using the shopping bags.

According to Elilan the people of the northern sector are also being educated on the alternatives to the thin polythene shopping bags.

During the discussion, it was interesting also to realise that the Forest Protection Division of the LTTE have planted one million trees in the Northern sector.

In fact according to the Vavuniya leader, the importance of tree cover for the environment is well understood by the LTTE and that they will continue to provide young plants for those interested in planting.

During this meeting, plans were made to educate the public on solid waste management including recycling, as well as composting.

The meeting was also attended by Rev. Albert Swarnaraj of the Wanni Mission of Vavuniya. On the whole it is indeed a pleasure to realise that in some parts of the Island the environmental protection is considered as an important part of human life.
