'Poverty causes serious impact on education of children'

'The quality improvement of the country's education is vital for the economic and social advancement, in the development priorities education is considered to be the foremost.

In view of the competitive priorities in the sphere of development, the Government alone cannot shoulder the heavy responsibilities.

The ubiquitous poverty caused a serious impact on the education of the children, said Mass Communication Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Markar at a free distribution of exercise books ceremony at Beruwala.

Around 4000 students representing Halkandawila Primary, Mahagoda Samsudeen MV, Moragalla Junior School, Beruwala Junior School, Beruwala Buddhist Junior School, and Bandarawatte and Beruwala Roman Catholic School benefited by this.

According to the latest statistics 25% of the children have been denied of schooling. A similar number is continuing their studies under severe economic strain.

Educating the children to accept the future challenges is no easy task and as a result it devolves upon both the government and the non-governmental organizations to undertake their responsibilities towards the future generation.

Beruwala Sisu Udana Program is a case in point. Philanthropists in Beruwala divisional secretariat area volunteered to donate school exercise books to students which would eventually help increase the student population.

The rationale behind the government-sponsored program is to provide a decent standard of living to its people. However, the recent course of action resorted to by the President has posed a challenge to the country's economic stability and social progress.

WPC Member, A. M. Yousuff and Jayantha Abeygunasekera and Beruwala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Kusman de Silva and a large number of students participated at the occasion.
