'Visit BIMST-EC Year 2004' tourism campaign launched

Regional travel will be the primary focus of the 'Visit BIMST-EC Year 2004' tourism promotion campaign that will be officially inaugurated in India today.

India has already developed joint tourism promotional literature including CD Roms, posters, brochures and a special directory on Buddhist sites to mark the occasion. The event, will also coincide with the National Tourism Day in India.

BIMST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand) established in 1997 is a regional grouping of countries for greater fast track economic co-operation with emphasis on six key sectors.

As part of the tourism sector cooperation and enhancement initiatives, India will also play a focal part this year, in promoting intra and inter regional travel within the member countries.

Last year's BIMST_EC preliminary tourism deliberations, held in Sri Lanka, focused on the opportunities available to woo the pilgrim traffic, given the growth envisaged for the this tourism segment.

Enhancing and promoting the attractions of the region and projecting its diversity through joint promotional initiatives was another key area of focus amongst the member countries' travel and tour operator fraternity.

The sessions, last year in Sri Lanka, held in Colombo and Kandy was also a prelude to this year's campaign strategy, which aims at developing the potential for tourism in the South East Asian countries.
