FDK Lanka to go ahead with multi-million dollar expansion program By Shirajiv Sirimane The political development in Sri Lanka would not affect the industry, investment or business said the Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama. The Minister told the 'Daily News' that he has convinced FDK Lanka Limited to go ahead with the milti million-dollar second phase expansion program. The Minister said that the members of the Japan Industrial forum wanted to meet him to get an update on the current political situation of the country. "I explained to them that this was only a political development and it would not have a negative impact on the economy." The Chairman of the Board of Investment Arjunna Mahendran also endorsed this idea. The FDK Lankan officials said that the company would go ahead with their expansion program by the middle of this year. "This expansion plan would generate 3,000 employment opportunities," he said. FDK Lanka is in the electronic component production business The Japanese investors agreed to go ahead with other development programs, which they had earlier scheduled for Sri Lanka. A delegation from the Indian based Infosys, one of the largest IT companies in Asia was in Sri Lanka last week to explore the investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. The company is keen on the Call centre, networking and outsourcing business. The Minister said the delegation has assured that they would go ahead in investing in Sri Lanka. Bogollagama will leave for India today as a special invitee for the Indian National Day celebrations. He will also sign the proposed industrial agreement between Sri Lanka and India on January 27 in New Delhi with the Indian Minister of Small Industries C. P. Thakoor. The Minister said that the recently concluded SAARC conference has given a fresh impetus for business for the entire region and has increased the investor confidence. The Minister said that the decision to form the South Asian Preferential Trade Agreement (SAFTA) in 2006 too would be very beneficial for SAARC countries. He said that the appointment of Macky Hashim as the President of the SAARC Chamber of Industry (SCCI) would be an added benefit for Sri Lanka. |
