Legal action to preserve Murali's good name by Dr. Ajith C. S. Perera Sri Lanka Cricket Lovers' Organisation has taken up the case of vituperative attack and vilification of ace spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan, a national asset we have, by a group headed by former Indian spinner Bishen Singh Bedi. This organisation established in 1995 has amongst its membership eminent personnel from the medical, legal, scientific, cricket and many other avenues. At its meeting held last week under the Chairmanship of Dr. W. G. Wimaladharma, the Organisation's Secretary General Professor Anton Jayasuriya has alerted President's Counsel Eardley Perera about the news item that appeared in the 'Daily News' of 25th December 2003 under the heading "Bedi attacks Muralitharan again". 'Here Bedi has branded Muralitharan "a burglar, a thief, a dacoit". It was based on a report in the Australia's national daily newspaper "The Australian" indicating that 'Bedi has renewed his criticism of the bowler just as Murali picked up another man of the series award with an incredible 26 wickets in the series against England'. Addressing Eardley Perera P.C., Jayasuriya says: "We are requesting you, on behalf of the Sri Lanka Cricket Lovers' Club, to take legal action to preserve the good name of our ace spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan. As this is an international scandal to damage the reputation of our golden icon, may we request you to sue the offenders, singly and severally, for not less than US Dollars one million each". |
