Pervez Musharraf at President's House yesterday (January 5). Two leaders met in a warm and friendly manner and had discussions to strengthen the bilateral relation between the two countries. The discussion focused to develop the socio-economic activities in the region, Sri Lankan diplomatic sources in Islamabad told the Daily News. The President also thanked the Pakistan President for the excellent arrangements made to conduct the SAARC Summit. Meanwhile President Kumaratunga had bilateral talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali yesterday. The two leaders also laid emphasis on Sri Lanka, Pakistan relationship to promote regional co-operation. As a distinguished feature, Pakistani Prime Minister welcomed the invitation made by the President to come to Sri Lanka as a symbolic gesture of promoting bilateral relations between two countries, the sources said. President Kumaratunga on Sunday met Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nepali Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa. The talks centred on bilateral and regional cooperation to overcome difficulties faced in the socio-economic spheres in the region. The President had lengthy discussions with Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee at Serena Hotel. During their bilateral talks, two leaders focused to develop trade activities between the two countries, especially after implementation of SAFTA. Nepal Prime Minister Thapa who paid a courtesy call on President Kumaratunga at Panjab House widely discussed ways and means to successfully implement the decisions reached by SAARC Leaders at this 12th summit. Meanwhile, Pakistan President Musharraf called on the summit leaders on Sunday and hosted a banquet in their honour at the Aiwan-i-Sadr. At this reception, the Pakistan President stressed the need to expand the SAARC charter to discuss the bilateral issues at regional level, Sri Lankan Diplomatic sources disclosed. |
