Workshop on 'Use of Spectroscopy in Food Analysis'

A two-day workshop on "The use of Spectroscopy in Food Analysis" jointly organised by the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon and the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Peradeniya is scheduled to be held on Friday, 09th and Saturday, 10th January 2004 at the Department of Food Science & Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.

Prof. Siromi I. Samarasinghe, President, Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon, in her news release states that the workshop which is of national importance will be conducted by an eminent panel of experts in the field of food science.

The resource persons identified are Prof. Upali Samarajeewa, Senior Professor in Food Science and Technology, University of Peradeniya, Prof. H. M. N. Bandara, Department of Chemistry, University of Peradeniya, Dr. Swarna Wimalasiri, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Peradeniya and E. G. Somapala, Additional Government Analyst, Government Analyst's Department, Colombo 07.

The main objectives of the workshop are:-

To enhance the knowledge on spectroscopic techniques used in food analysis, to provide training on preparation of samples for analysis of food and to provide opportunities for collaborative activities among institutions for the development of industries. In this context the following lectures and practical sessions will be conducted by experts engaged in the field on food science.

Lectures on an overview - spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy and flame emission spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Practicals on use of UV-visible spectrophotometer in quantification of nutrients, use of fluorometer in detecting toxic substances and use of atomic absorption spectrophotometer in quantification of minerals.
