Sri Lankan students excel

A 135 member team of students and teachers returned to Colombo last week, with 10 awards including the most prestigious "Ishikawa Trophy", from the International Convention on Students' Quality Control Circles 2003 held in Lucknow, India organised by the City Montessori School and Degree College, under the aegis of QCI International USA, Quality Circle Forum of India and the World Council for Total Quality and Excellence in Education (WCTQEE). Lankan Students carried away the highest number of awards among all participating Countries.

This large number of delegates from eight schools attended the 6th ICSQCC convention, held at the City Montessori School and Degree College, Lucknow, India. From December 16-19 2003, under the theme "Quality for Peace".

It was the largest gathering of Students, Teachers, Principals and Quality Gurus numbering to 2,700 delegates from 17 countries. The largest foreign delegation was from Nepal and followed by Sri Lanka. The delegation from Sri Lanka consisted students and teachers from Ananda College, Mahanama College, Isipathana College, Holy Family Convent/Colombo 4, Bishop's College, Althea International College, Wattegama Central College, Kandy and Basilica College, Ragama.

Accompanying the Sri Lankan team was Vidya Nidhi Dr. N. R. de Silva, Rev Sister Canice, Principal, Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, Kumari Hapugalle Perera, Managing Directress, Althea International School, Dehiwala, E. N. B. Silva, Principal, Basilica College, Ragama, Padmini Rajapakse, Director Sri Lanka branch WCTQEE, Nelum de Silva, Co-ordinator for Sri Lanka/ICSQCC, Ranjith Goonatilake (International Management Consultant).

The registrations of delegates was on the 16th morning. Vidya Nidhi Dr. N. R. de Silva and Mr. Ranjith Goonatilake were invited to take part in the Panel discussion. Daily at 8.00 am all the students, teachers and other dignitaries attended assembly, where Quality Gurus, Principals addressed the students.

There were 82 QC and case study presentations under nine streams. Althea International School, Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya, Isipatana Vidyalaya, Mahanama College, Ananda College, Basilica College, Ragama and Bishops College participated in the case study presentation.

They also participated in various events, which included debate and Quality Quiz.

In addition there were 22 paper presentations. A Teacher delegation from Wattegama Central College presented a paper at this convention highlighting the QC activities in their School.

To select teams for the quiz competition, a written test was conducted and two teams from Sri Lanka, Bishops College and Ananda College were selected to the final round.

The Co-ordination Committee Meeting of the World Council for Total Quality and Excellence in Education was held on 18th December under the Chairmanship of Mr. Jagdish Gandhi visionary and the founder of Students' quality circle movement and Dr. Mrs Vineeta Kamran the Convenor of the ICSQCC and Executive Director, WCTQEE. Sri Lanka was represented by Dr. N. R. De Silva, Advisor to the World Council, Mrs Nelum De Silva Director General and Ranjith Goonatilake Deputy Director General. The country report was presented by the Director General for Sri Lanka, Mrs Nelum De Silva.

It was confirmed that the 7th ICSQCC will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 17th - 18th December 2004, and the 8th ICSQCC to be held in Lucknow in December 2005.

Our students were the talking point of the Convention impressing with their excellent performance, discipline, winning the highest number of awards. They moved with all the other students and had a great comradeship.
