A joint team from the United States Coast Guard and the Defence Security Cooperation Agency is visiting Sri Lanka, states a US Embassy press release. While on the Island, the team will tour Sri Lanka's shipyards, dry dock facilities and ports as part of the preparations for delivery of the US Coast Guard Cutter "Courageous". The 210 foot medium endurance vessel will be granted to Sri Lanka under the United States Excess Defence Article program and will enhance the oceangoing capability of the Sri Lanka Navy. The visiting team will coordinate administrative and logistic details surrounding the delivery to Sri Lanka of the Courageous, expected to arrive before end of year 2004. The group will also explore crew training and ship refurbishment issues. This long-planned visit is one of many ongoing programs between the US and Sri Lankan militaries, and exemplifies the strong relationship between the two nations. |
