by Nadira Gunatileke The Sri Lanka Krebshilfe e.v. (Sri Lanka Cancer Aid Society) in Hamburg, Germany has donated over Rs.5 million worth hospital equipment to the Cancer Hospital. This is the second donation made by the same organisation. The current donation consists of 41 beds, 22 pairs of crutches, three wheelchairs, two meal trolleys, ten dust bins and 15 neon tube lights. The donation will be handed over to the Cancer Hospital shortly. The Sri Lanka Krebshilfe e.v. Germany is purely a Charity organisation approved by the Government of Germany and was founded in June 2000 at the initiative of Mr. Gerald and Ms. Sunitha Gunasekera with the support of six more German friends. Through these years the organization has been of tremendous assistance to the cancer hospital. In 2001 the organization financed the reconstruction of an existing room into a consultation room and the construction of a waiting hall for outdoor patients at the cancer hospital which cost Rs.200,000. In February 2002, the organization sent a container load of beds, new mattresses, wheelchairs, operating theatre equipment worth over Rs.5 million. These items were donated by Hamburgs Wandsbek General Hospital and St.Albertinen Hospital. The organization donated Rs.515,000, almost half of the estimated cost of construction of a twenty roomed ward. The construction of this ward is still in progress. |
