Sour grapes

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) health officials have destroyed nearly 1,000 kilograms of grapes deemed unsuitable for human consumption following a raid on a trading stall in Pettah during the weekend.

"The entire consignment of grapes were spoilt and unsuitable for human consumption," an official who participated in the raid told the Daily News. See page 14

He said the grapes were being sold retail when the raid was conducted by which time several kilos had already been sold.

After a preliminary inquiry, health officials destroyed the entire consignment of grapes while some were sent for laboratory test. "Mildew had set in on part of the grapes and we believe that some grapes may have perished during shipment," the official said. Municipal sources said investigations were on to trace the importer who had also distributed the grapes.

During the festive season, Municipal health authorities increased inspection and vigilance amidst reports that outdated food items had flooded the market. Special teams of food inspectors were deployed to carry out inspections throughout the City to protect consumers from errant traders selling unhygienic and outdated food items.

During the season, food inspectors destroyed unhygienic food items valued over Rs. 200,000. "We have increased inspections to ensure the consumers' safety", CMC Chief Medical Officer Pradeep Kariyawasam said.

The inspections are carried out under directions of CMC Chief Food Inspector S.M. Kathriarachchi.

The public can make complain to the Municipal Council on 01 - 2676161.
