Parish Priest killed in road accident

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Three persons including Katuneriya Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Priyantha Dilruk Obris (29) were killed on the spot when their van collided with a private passenger bus near Mudukatuwa, Marawila on Sunday night, police said.

The other victims were youth in their twenties, Police said. A tensed situation followed as an angry crowd blocked the Colombo-Puttalam highway, burnt tyres and attempted to set fire to the bus forcing police to use tear gas to control the situation.

The crowd had also pelted stones at buses passing by.

Initial investigations revealed that the 29-year-old Assistant Parish Priest had been at the wheel of the van returning from Chilaw when the mishap took place around 11.20 p.m. Police said the Vavuniya bound private bus was proceeding at high speed. Security was tightened near St. Anthony's Church and Marawila Hospital premises following the incident where additional police emergency squads were deployed to prevent the eruption of violence, police said. The situation was brought under control by noon yesterday, police said. The private bus driver has been taken into police custody.
