Business delegation hails decision to resolve political impasse

by Gamini Chandrasena, Katugastota groupcor.

A business delegation led by Hatton National Bank Managing Director Rienzie Wijetilleke has hailed the decision by the Mahanayake Theras to resolve the present political impasse by bringing the President and the Prime Minister to the negotiating table.

The Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter said that the President, Prime Minister and leaders of other political parties should get together and prevent the present political crisis from dragging on and seriously damaging the economy by replacing the harmful J.R. Jayewardene Constitution with a new Constitution more suitable for the country's needs.

He was addressing a group of business leaders led by the Chairman of Sri Lanka First who called on him at the Malwatte Viharaya in Kandy on Sunday. Managing Director Hatton National Bank Rienzie Wijetilleke was also present. Ven. Vipassi Thera said the J.R. Jayewardene Constitution had been the cause for all major problems and crises in the country and people should get together and change it as a matter of urgency without sticking to outdated ideas and concepts.

Commenting on the current situation in the country Ven. Vipassi Thera said except for the late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake all other rulers who succeeded him had paid scant or no regard whatsoever towards placing the country on a sound economic footing.

This had led to an unfortunate situation where the country had to be fully dependant on foreign aid for its survival, making politicians to unashamedly warn that the country would lose foreign aid if the political crisis dragged on any more.

Rather than waiting for foreign assistance what today's leaders should do was to develop the national economy by utilising local resources, the Mahanayake Thera said.

The business leaders present hailed the decision made by the Mahanayake Theras to resolve the present crisis by bringing the President and Prime Minister to the negotiating table and said unless the political struggle in the South was resolved there was every likelihood of LTTE proclaiming a separate state in the North East very soon.
