Plans afoot to develop five ports: Hakeem

The Port Development and Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem said on Thursday that the plans were afoot to develop and expand activities of the Galle, Oluvil, Trincomalee, Kankesanturai and Point Pedro Ports.

He was also optimistic that the country would be back to normal soon despite the persisting political differences.

Addressing the employees of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) at the New Year ceremony at the Ports Authority, he said nowhere in the world there was politics sans challenges but those challenges had to be faced and overcome.

Hakeem said the rapid progress the SLPA had made during the last year was like that of a private institution.

"The remarkable progress achieved by SLPA, recording substantial profits and super performance in its operational activities had changed the attitude of officials dealing with the state finances", the Minister said.
