The JVP in a press release yesterday said it would condemn with contempt any attempt by the United States or any other power to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka. The release said certain sections of the media reported on Tuesday that the US had delivered a sharp warning that the bitter political struggle between the Prime Minister and the President was denting hopes for peace with the LTTE. The warning had been delivered when US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met Economic Reforms Science and Technology Minister Milinda Moragoda who called to complain about the sorry plight to which their government had fallen into recently. Today in Sri Lanka there was a mass discontent and protest against the UNF government's plans to divide the country and sell its assets to foreign capitalists. The government was trying to fend off this opposition by getting the US to issue warnings and veiled threats to the people of this country, the release said. This action of the UNF Government was most degrading and resentful. The internal problems of our country should be solved according to the wishes of its people rather than the whims and fancies of world powers. The people should elect their leadership according to their own preference and not according to the wishes of US or any other power, it said. The release alleged that people like Ranil Wickremesinghe and Milinda Moragoda who had no power base in this country today were trying to carry forward and implement their treacherous policy of dividing the nation by getting "outside thugs" to warn and oppress the people. While vehemently condemning these acts perpetrated by the Wickremesinghe unique, the JVP called upon all progressive people to join hands and come forward to drive this "anti people puppet regime" away and instal a people friendly government in its place. |
